Out of Character

Hi. I'm your mouse. Please move me away from this crap.

The Real First Comic

When you create a comic on Comic Genesis, you are supposed to send them a comic so they know you're not a hack (actually it seems they'll let anything but sprite comics. Fuck sprite comics!). This was the comic I sent them to create this domain. Now, technically, the first comic will end up being your first comic when the site goes online, but for whatever reason CG's servers had a moment of madness and the comic was lost to the aether forever. I decided to use the comic that introduces the mansion (which should be the second comic) as the first comic de facto. I also promised myself that if I kept up the work and got to, at least, the tenth comic, I'd put up this comic here on the filler area as a curio.

Why didn't I just resubmit this comic? Great question. Let's see what's wrong with it:

  • It's horizontal. All my comics are vertical. This comic felt better as a horizontal comic, but it doesn't seem to be the same thing, and the first comic should set the mood.
  • It's wrong. The fourth panel should have been a double-panel, making the comic rectangular. I screwed up.
  • It mentions Penny Arcade right off the bat. Not that mentioning World of Warcraft is much better, but at least it's on the second comic.
  • It used the old 'let's maek a webcomic lol' gag. It's quite possibly the single most overused way to starting a webcomic after only earnestly having the characters discussing making a webcomic, but I don't think anyone actually does that any more.
  • Finally, one of the things that were wrong with it was that my character was called 'The Random One'. As I probably explained elsewhere on the site, this comic was created as a joint-venture by people on a message board I used to go to, and as such some people would use their real life names, some would use their usernames, and some would use made-up nicknames. The Random One is my username, so my character was named that. The problem is that The Random One stuck out like a sore thumb, since the other names felt a lot more normal. I switched it to Andre because of that. Strangely enough, the actual comic doesn't have anyone being called by their names, even though I made a point of that (it being the first comic at all) so I probably rewrote it once and didn't save the modified file.

I hope you enjoy it. I know I didn't.
